When your shoulder changes the way you play
If pickleball shoulder pain leaves you aching when reaching for a shot, pay attention before your next game. Shoulder pain can affect more than your serve; it may also make it hard to get dressed, lift objects, or sleep comfortably.
What could be causing the pain?
The rotator cuff helps lift and rotate your arm. Problems involving its tendons can cause pain or weakness, but shoulder symptoms have several possible causes. Pain after pickleball does not automatically mean a torn tendon. An assessment helps determine what needs attention and whether further medical evaluation is appropriate.
What to do before your next match
Avoid repeatedly testing a painful shot. Scale back movements that aggravate symptoms and discuss a suitable plan for returning to play with a qualified clinician. Persistent pain, weakness, or difficulty with everyday activities deserves an assessment. After a fall or sudden injury, severe pain or inability to lift the arm calls for prompt medical evaluation.
Discussing sports acupuncture care
At Tucson Sports Medicine Acupuncture, we discuss your symptoms, activity demands, and recovery goals. Dr. Mojgan Rezaei, DACM, L.Ac., C.SMA, provides individualized acupuncture care with a sports medicine focus. If acupuncture is appropriate, we will explain its role and how it may fit alongside rehabilitation or other recommended care. Research on acupuncture varies by condition. Acupuncture does not repair a torn tendon.
