When golf elbow pain affects your swing
Golf elbow pain can make gripping a club, practicing at the range, or enjoying a round uncomfortable. For golfers in Oro Valley and Tucson, recurring symptoms are a reason to pause and look at what is causing the problem rather than repeatedly playing through pain.
What is golfer’s elbow?
Golfer’s elbow, also called medial epicondylitis, involves the tendons attaching forearm muscles to the inner elbow. Repeated loading or overexertion can irritate and damage these tissues. Despite its name, it can also affect people who do not play golf.
Inner-elbow pain is different from the outer-elbow symptoms commonly associated with tennis elbow. Neither label can be confirmed from the location alone. A clinician can assess your symptoms and consider other causes, especially if you have tingling, numbness, or weakness.
What to do before your next round
Reduce activities that repeatedly provoke the pain and seek an assessment if it persists. Tell your clinician when symptoms started, whether gripping or wrist movements hurt, and how often you practice. A rehabilitation plan may include activity changes and appropriately progressed exercises. Avoid treating pain relief as proof that the tendon is ready for a full return to golf.
Where acupuncture may fit into care
At Tucson Sports Medicine Acupuncture, Dr. Mojgan Rezaei, DACM, L.Ac., C.SMA, discusses your symptoms, goals, and activity demands before recommending individualized care. If acupuncture is appropriate, we explain how it may fit alongside rehabilitation and other recommended treatment. Research on acupuncture differs by pain condition; evidence for some chronic pain conditions does not establish that it heals golfer’s elbow.
